Using Citrix for Microsoft documents
CDE's dtmail and email attachments
When you receive an email attachment while using dtmail, the
icon of the file will appear just under the body of the email: <image>
The Problem
Typically, you would double-click on the icon to open the file in a
compatible viewer. The behavior of dtmail, however, does not work
correctly with Citrix. When any attachment is opened from dtmail,
it makes a copy of the attachment in a temporary location ($HOME/.dt/tmp),
spawns the correct viewer pointing it to the temporary copy, then deletes
the copy when the viewer has been exited. This does not work properly
with Citrix since the Citrix session spawns itself in a new shell, detached
from the original shell. The original shell then dies, and dtmail,
detecting that the shell has died (though Citrix has just started), deletes
the temporary copy before Citrix has a chance to open the file.
The Workaround
Since the attachments can't (yet) be spawned directly from dtmail,
you must copy the file into your home direcory, start a Citrix session,
then open the file from the H: drive in the Windows 2000 desktop on echo.
First, start File Manager under CDE: <image>
Now drag the file from the dtmail window into the File Manager window,
which should be open to your home directory: <image>
Start Citrix, log in, and open the H: drive from My Computer:

Double click on the document icon in the H: drive window: <image>
Opening attachments from pine
When viewing an email in pine with an attachment, there will
be a "View Attachment" option in the menu below the body of the message.
Select ">" to go to the View Attachment menu. From there, use "S"ave
to save the file into your home directory, or a subdirectory of your home
directory. The file will then be available from Citrix in your H:
folder (or subdirectory thereof).
Viewing attachments from Netscape Messenger
Netscape behaves in a similar manner to dtmail in that once
the viewer it spawns to view the document exits, it removes the temporary
file before Citrix has a chance to read it. When in Messenger and
reading an email that contains an attachment, right-click on the name of
the attachment, and select 'Save Link As...' from the popup menu.
Save the file into your home directory. Start Citrix, and open the
H: drive to access the file.
