Connection problems with X Windows-based forwarding

Often users can establish basic connectivity with "ssh" to NCAR systems, but have trouble with X-based display applications such as debuggers, profilers, or editors. Note, that if you cannot execute and display back a simple "xterm" you will not be able to display more complicated X clients to your local workstation. The following example may provide some helpful pointers to basic "ssh" and X11 interoperability. It is not meant to be inclusive, as there can be many different versions of X11, and sometimes problems can be more esoteric than simple authorization or forwarding through the "ssh" tunnel.
