Desktop standardization plan

During FY1999, OSG staff has been updating and standardizing all software on Wintel desktop and laptop systems. In March 1999, OSG finished its testing of Y2K software for operating systems and applications. After testing was done, OSG took aggressive measures to ensure that all Wintel machines supported by OSG are Y2K compliant and that all machines are standardized.

OSG now supports 132 Wintel machines, all of which are Y2K compliant. During this lengthy project, OSG took the opportunity not only to standardize but also create a database of all machines supported by OSG. This database specifies internal hardware configurations and a complete list of software installed on every machine. OSG also has created individual hardcopy folders for each machine with detailed information about the machine.

Information recorded in these folders includes:

• Machine name
• User name
• Date machine was purchased
• Date when three-year warranty runs out
• Serial numbers
• Hardware configurations
• Software installed
• Last time machine was updated
• Repair history

These new databases will help OSG in troubleshooting and expediting repairs, keeping downtime to a minimum.
