Resource allocation improvements
In FY1998, SCD's Database Services Group (DBSG) began developing software
to make the application and allocation process for computing resources
easier for users, reviewers, and facilitating staff. For the first time:
- Climate Simulation Laboratory (CSL) applicants were able to request
allocations using a web application form that fed directly into an
all-electronic panel book.
- Community-resource applicants were able to apply for resources though a
web-enabled form that lets them save their data temporarily, recall and
change it as necessary, and submit it. The facility also sends email
to the applicant, the PI, and the student sponsor (if applicable) with
a copy of the submitted request. Applicants now have a choice of
either providing plain text or uploading a local file in Acrobat form for
the proposal summary.
- The panel book for the October 1998 meeting of the SCD Advisory Panel was
all-electronic, allowing for dynamic rebuilding as last-minute applications
arrived. The electronic format gave reviewers earlier access to requests
and saved the cost of producing and mailing numerous, thick, hardcopy panel
books.
