Website usability research
SCD's website is an information delivery site where content is critical
and far outweighs entertainment value or artistic effect. The Digital
Information Group stays abreast of current research in website
usability and content delivery and applies this research to their
web development projects. They distribute this knowledge via web page
templates and presentations to UCAR staff.
Good website design bases its architecture on user needs and serves
diverse audiences. Good design does not filter out users, but
presents information quickly and intuitively.
Diverse users have different learning styles, as well as
different computing platforms, operating systems,
and browsers that render web content differently. DIG staff work to
develop and refine web pages that
provide easy access to the same
rich content regardless of the users' hardware, software, or level of
technical sophistication. Finally, DIG strives to make websites that
are fully accessible to people with disabilites.
During the summer of 2000, DIG designer Lynda Lester developed a
new design for the entire SCD website based on the
new UCAR website.
During the fall of 2000, and as an ongoing project, she is refining
and upgrading this design to improve usability, content delivery,
appearance, and accessibility. The
current SCD website
is an extension of the work done in FY2000.
