Anatomy of a Widespread Security Compromise
Last March and April, universities and supercomputing sites across the nation and around the world experienced multiple computer breakins. Many UCAR systems were successfully attacked during the outbreak, resulting in downtime for many of our users.
This seminar will cover what happened at UCAR and elsewhere, both from our perspective as we discovered the problems, and looking back at what we now know the attackers did before we found them. We'll also cover our successful and ongoing collaboration with other institutions affected by the same attacks. Finally, we'll conclude with the lessons we've learned, and how we are reshaping UCAR security practices to face the changing threats.
The seminar will be about an hour long, with time for question and answer both during and afterward.
