T he CUG Security Mutual Interest Group (MIG) is sponsored by the Operating Systems Special Interest Committee and is open to all members of the Cray User Group. The Security MIG covers all Cray security issues; we are not limited to issues dealing strictly with MLS configuration. If your site is interested in any aspect of Cray security, we want to hear from you!The Security MIG has several announcements to make. We have a new American deputy, Frank Lovato of the Naval Oceanographic Office. Paul Falde has retired as our Cray Research contact, passing the torch to Jim Grindle.
A few of you may have noticed that our European deputy, Philippe Martinez, was unable to attend the Charlotte meeting. Philippe's second child, a son named Brice, arrived right in the middle of the week. The Security MIG would like to thank Paul for his help in the past and welcome our new members: Jim, Frank, and little Brice (another member for CUG 2025!).
As requested by you, the members of the Security MIG, we sponsored a tutorial in Charlotte on network security. Ned Deily of Cray Research did a good job of introducing the Cray tools available to aid UNICOS administrators and users in securing their Cray network.
The Security MIG also sponsored three talks. Jim Grindle gave us an update on MLS issues in UNICOS/mk. Wayne Schroeder of the San Diego Supercomputer Center presented an overview of the SDSC's continuing efforts in network security. The third talk was something new, one that had been suggested by CUG attendees in Barcelona. We invited Jay McCauley of Silicon Graphics, Inc. (SGI) to give us an overview of SGI's IRIX security features. We were glad to hear that SGI uses the same security lingo as we do and that both companies have a common vision for security futures.
We are currently soliciting input for your choice of security presentations for the upcoming San Jose CUG in May 1997. Please contact any representative of the Security MIG if you have ideas or suggestions for future talks, tutorials, or presentations. We need your input to continue providing security information that meets your needs.
The Security MIG is pleased to announce our own home page on the World Wide Web! We can be found off the CUG home page (http://www.cug.org). Wayne Schroeder of SDSC is our new web administrator, and he's done a fine job of bringing us into the 90s! Come visit us in cyberspace!
