Report from the regional director of the Americas

Placing a high value on working relationships

rule

I wish to first thank all installation delegates who voted at the North Carolina Cray User Group (CUG) meeting, and especially to those that voted for me. Is is an honor to have been selected as one of your Board of Directors, namely, regional director of the Americas.

I would like to provide you with a brief background on myself as I am sure some of you do not know me.

My name is Barry Sharp and I work for the Boeing Company. I have supported Boeing's Cray systems since 1979, starting with a Cray-1S. Since then I've managed X-MPs, Y-MPs, and T90s and have been an active CUG member for the past 16 years.

At Boeing, we place a high value on the working relationship with suppliers such as Cray Research. CUG is an excellent vehicle for maintaining and improving the relationship between Cray and its customers. As a board member, I will attempt to further the collaboration between CUG and Cray and will ensure that CUG continues to remain a strong influence on the future direction of Silicon Graphics, Inc./Cray Research, Inc. (SGI/CRI).

My personal focus is on performance and reliability at an affordable price. If there are any questions that you feel I can help have answered, please do not hestitate in sending them to me.

My first two actions items, given to me at the North Carolina CUG, were:

  • Future SGI/CRI source code policy
  • CUG help desk

Both were presented at the CUG Advisory Council meeting. Some mention of a general session for addressing the first item was raised, and SGI/CRI indicated they would explore usefuleness of future help desks by gathering input from customers. A comment made was that at past CUG meetings the help desk got little attention, which lead to its demise.
