A h ... beautiful San Jose in May. Perhaps the only better place to
have a conference during Cinco de Mayo would be in Mexico. Many
good times were had with the local folks! I know this personally,
as I somehow ended up with a five-foot-high Corona beer bottle
in my room that night. Kudos to the San Jose Local Arrangments crew for putting on a great conference! Walter Wehinger and group have a tough act to follow in Stuttgart. A number of user sites gave us updates on what is happening in the Mass Storage area at their facilities. Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, San Diego Supercomputing Center, and UNIKIEL talked about three different ways to attack the uphill battle of mass storage. Cray Research gave the popular updates on Data Migration Facility (DMF) development and future tape support, and as usual, cleared up many questions we've had. The Mass Storage SIG teamed up with the newly created IRIX SIG to bring Impactdata in to talk about their Network Peripheral Adapter technology. This technology looks promising for Silicon Graphics equipment as well as "classic" Cray equipment. The MSS SIG is looking for a U.S. deputy chair, so if you are interested in helping out European deputy Hartmut Fichtel or myself with future conferences, it would be greatly appreciated! Look forward to seeing everyone in Stuttgart--and get your ideas in for future talks. You can reach me at rjs@ncsc.org, Hartmut at fichtel@dkrz.de, or find us at the MSS SIG Web page (http://www.arl.mil/CUG). |
