The Spring 1997 Cray User Group meeting had excellent attendance from sites with J90s. Most of the J90 sites had other Cray Research hardware, but some had stand-alone systems. The J90 has been a popular machine and a price performance leader in PVP computers.
Dan Ferber of Silicon Graphics/Cray Research presented a tutorial Monday, "Configuring and Running Multiple J90s in a Cluster."
A session on J90 clustering issues and experiences included
three excellent talks:
- "SuperCluster J90 at ETHZ: A Progress Report" -- Bruno Loepfe, ETHZ
- "Experiences Operating a Cluster of Two J90s Using NQE 3.1" -- Eric Lebeau, Renault
- "Experiences Tuning a J90 for Engineering Analysis: A Case Study" --
Sharan Kalwani, SGI/Cray Research
The Thursday J90 Special Interest Group business meeting was attended by 30 people from U.S., European, and Japanese sites. The main discussion was about J90 hardware and was led by Jim Sundet, head of J90 hardware development for SGI/Cray Research. He presented current and future plans for the J90, J90SE, and J90++. He answered many questions about the compatibility of hardware upgrades. Training for Cray Research field engineers was discussed, as well as support for operating system and hardware upgrades.
Some sites did not receive important field notices, so it was
suggested they check CRInform often for this information.
The attendees of the J90 business meeting supported more information on J90 cluster tuning and a more in-depth tutorial at the next CUG meeting.
