New Programming Environments SIG report

SGI leadership and CUG reorg dominated Stuttgart CUG . . .

The Programming Environments Special Interest Group (SIG) was formed at the Stuttgart meeting within the framework of CUG's reorganization. The new SIG will initially encompass two Focus Groups. Hans-Hermann Frese of ZIB will chair the Compilers and Libraries Focus Group, and Guy Robinson of the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center will chair the Software Tools Focus Group. (For more details on the restructuring, see "CUG SIGs get a facelift" and A guide to the new CUG SIGs.")

While I foresee these two Focus Groups as being more permanent, the new structure allows for more dynamic creation and elimination of focus groups in the context of the parent SIGs. We're still sorting out some of the details, but hopefully, all will be more clear by the time the November call for papers is issued for the Spring 1999 CUG in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.

Until then, we're working on it!
