At the 40th Cray User Group Conference in Stuttgart, Germany, the former Operating Systems Special Interest Group (SIG) sponsored a successful and interesting program. Both sessions were well attended.

On Tuesday morning, Patti Langer and Jim Grindle from SGI presented two talks about status and updates on PVP UNICOS (T90, C90, J90) and on UNICOS/mk (T3E). Barry Sharp from Boeing Corporation discussed enhancements to the UNICOS kernel, system administration, and user-level facilities that have been made at Boeing.

The morning session on Thursday was dedicated to resource management. The new MISER job scheduler for IRIX was presented by Kostadis Roussos from SGI. A lively discussion developed concerning features of MISER and its interaction with batch queuing systems such as NQE.

Barry Sharp talked about modifications to the UNICOS system memory scheduler to adequately balance batch and interactive workload. Manfred Stolle from Konrad Zuze-Zentrum für Informationstechnik (ZIB) showed a solution for dealing with slim disk space resources on a DMF server.

I'd like to thank all our speakers for their contributions.

Important organizational changes

Meanwhile, during business meetings, important changes were made to the organization of the technical committees.

The Operating Systems SIG, the IRIX SIG, and the Security SIG were moved under one new Operating Systems "super" SIG. Under this SIG, UNICOS, IRIX, and Security each have their own Focus Group. Ingeborg Weidl is chair of the UNICOS Focus Group, Cheryl Wampler is chair of the IRIX FOcus Group, and Virginia Bedford is chair of the Security Focus Group.

Terry Jones has resigned as acting chair of the former Operating Systems SIG. Thank you Terry for your valuable work during the past four years!

The chair for the new Operating Systems SIG is Chuck Keagle from Boeing Corporation, USA. (See "New Operating Systems SIG Report" for more information.
