At the Stuttgart CUG, the former Applications and Algorithms Special Interest Group (SIG) was responsible for eleven presentations in four sessions.

The first session was called "Exploiting Parallelism," which included presentations by both SGI representatives and Cray users. The key topics presented were the open MP programming model and open MP multitasking and autotasking.

The second session was "Powering Science," which dealt with material sciences on parallel computers and clustering T3Es for metacomputing applications.

The last two sessions presented the SGI applications roadmap. Two excellent user talks included "Mathematical Methods for Mining in Massive Data Sets" and "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Aspects of Installing New OS Releases."

All four A&A sessions were well attended with lively interaction between the speakers and the attendees.

Due to the new SIG restructuring (see "CUG SIGs get a facelift" and "A guide to the new CUG SIGs"), the Applications and Algorithms SIG will now be called the Applications Focus Group and reside under the High-Performance Solucations "super" SIG.

If you wish to submit applications papers for the next CUG (which will be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, in May '99), please contact Larry Eversole (larry.c.eversole@jpl.nasa.gov). The deadline for submission of abstracts is November 15, 1998.
