Mary Amiot, CUG's "best friend" in SGI/Cray for many years, was laid off in a major company downsizing one month after the June 1998 CUG. Her departure is a loss to CUG, which has relied on her since 1981 to assure the quality arrangements and smooth-running meetings CUG attendees expect.
Mary helped on many different levels. "She'd go out and work on contracts with hotels; she'd assist the Local Arrangements Committee (LAC) with the tasks they needed to get done. She was an excellent resource," says Sally Haerer, CUG president.
"The LAC was different for each conference, so Mary was the stability, the constant. She was also a big help in coordinating things between CUG and SGI. She was solely in charge of the traditional Monday night SGI reception, which has always been rated a five-star event by CUG attendees.
"Mary worked with the CUG board setting up meetings between conferences, and she also helped coordinate the CUG booth at the Supercomputing conferences," Sally observes.
In Stuttgart before the layoffs, Mary talked about her career with CUG. "I was hired on at Cray back in 1981 to do CUG and meetings; I've been doing it ever since. I came from Control Data Corporation, where I had run a couple of other user groups from 1969-81. So I've known a lot of these customers for 20 or more years.
"CUG has allowed me to have friends all over world; it has given me an opportunity to meet so many wonderful people -- they're like an extended family to me. I've looked forward to working with each and every local arrangements committee -- they're so appreciative of what you do."
CUG is indeed appreciative of the work Mary has done in the last 17 years. Thanks, Mary. We couldn't have done it without you. We wish you the very best.
