ReSET - Research Systems Evaluation Team

The Research Systems Evaluation Team (ReSET) evaluates emerging computer systems and technology for possible application to NCAR's computational workloads.

BlueGene/L Administration

ReSET administers the NCAR IBM BlueGene/L experimental system, Frost.

Grid Computing

ReSET is actively evaluating and developing Grid computing technologies. Our research focuses on the development of Grid environments to support the computational science needs of the NCAR geoscience community. We are currently evaluating the use of high-performance, distributed file systems in wide-area network environments such as the NSF TeraGrid. We are also evaluating the use of experimental computing platforms, such as the IBM BlueGene/L in computational Grids.

We are also developing tools and Grid-enabled applications to utilize the Grid infrastructure of NCAR and our collaborators. We have contributed to the development of the Grid-BGC project to build a grid-enabled terrestrial carbon cycle modeling system in collaboration with computer scientists from the University of Colorado and terrestrial ecology scientists in the Climate and Global Dynamics Division of NCAR. Currently under development is a more general service-oriented architecture that extends tools developed during development of Grid-BGC to support more legacy earth science applications, digital libraries, and computing platforms.
