Linux front-end server (longs)
Recommended use
- Serves as a UNIX front-end computer to NCAR supercomputing resources.
Longs is open to all Community Computing and CSL users who have GAU
allocations, and there are no charges for using longs.
- Suitable for small, general interactive work, including debugging,
file editing, and sending and receiving email.
- Resource for users of interactive mathematical and statistical
packages.
- Longs became available for general community use on November 16,
2000.
Hardware
- Number of processors: 2 (Pentium III)
- Memory size: 1 GB
- Disk space: 140 GB (SCSI RAID)
- Clock speed: 800 MHz
- Network connections: Gigabit Ethernet to the Mass Storage System and
to the Internet
Software
- Operating System: Red Hat Linux
- Compilers: Fortran 90, Fortran 77, C, C++ (from multiple vendors)
- Utilities: Redhat Package Manager (RPM), all standard UNIX utilities
- Application software: Use RPM to view current list
(
rpm -q -a prints a full list of installed
packages); more packages are available, subject to user input
Charges
There are no charges for using longs. However, Mass Storage System
charges will be incurred for MSS reads/writes and for MSS storage.
