Bluevista welcome for bluesky users

Last update: 01/03/2006

Dear bluesky user:

SCD is adding users to bluevista, NCAR's new IBM p5-575 clustered Symmetric MultiProcessing (SMP) system with POWER5 processors. This message is for existing users of bluesky, the POWER4 system at NCAR.

We are pleased to announce bluevista availability on January 9 at 10:00 am MST. If you have a bluesky account and have logged onto bluesky during the six months preceding December 31, 2005, you will have an account on bluevista with the same logon name, password, and project numbers as you have on bluesky.

Bluevista looks very much like the eight-way nodes on bluesky, but with better performance and a different batch system, LSF. Performance and overview information are provided in the news story Bluevista is here.

Here are a few essentials to help you get going on bluevista:

Help and contact information is the same as for bluesky: Call 303-497-1278 or email consult1@ucar.edu or submit a request via SCD Customer Support.

After you log on to bluevista, you may change your shell and password; to do so, ssh to blueview.ucar.edu using your bluevista logon name and follow the menu when logged on. Recommended dotfiles are in /usr/local/skel for .cshrc, .login, and .profile. Please customize them for your own needs and choice of shell.

A significant difference from bluesky is that you will be using the Load Sharing Facility (LSF) batch system on bluevista, not LoadLeveler. You will need to change each of your batch jobs before running because the job syntax is different and so are the batch queue names. See the bluevista main page for an introduction to bluevista and LSF. The XL compilers on bluevista are newer versions than the ones on bluesky. We recommend compiler options -O3 -qhot or -O3 -qhot=novector to improve job performance, but please verify your job output when using these new options.

Queues and charge factors are described in Queues and charging for resource usage on bluevista, which is linked from the bluevista main page.

Welcome to bluevista!
The CISL Team
